More From PBS: SONGS FOR SHELTER ME A PORTION OF THE PROCEEDS TO PAY FOR TRANSPORT OF SHELTER ANIMALS AVAILABLE OCTOBER 7.

Singer/songwriter Mindy Smith, who penned the theme song for the national PBS Series “Shelter Me,” has partnered with the show to produce Songs For Shelter Me, an 11-track various artist compilation CD available October 7.

A portion of the proceeds will go to pay for the transport of shelter pets from overcrowded shelters to areas of the country where they can be quickly adopted, assist with spray-neuter programs, education initiatives and innovative adoption events. Hosted by Allison Janney, the fourth episode, “Shelter Me: New Beginnings,” premieres on PBS in October and features two tracks from the compilation, the Smith-penned theme song, “Shelter Me,” and “Who Saved Who,” a duet with Smith and Matthew Perryman Jones. Featuring clips from the series, the video for “Shelter Me” premiered today at Los Angeles Times. Showcasing songs about inspiration, hope, redemption, and light, the album includes previously unreleased songs from an array of independent artists including, Peter Bradley Adams, Kris Allen, Trent Dabbs, Maggie Eckford, Jenny & Tyler, Matthew Perryman Jones, Korby Lenker, SHEL, and Kate York.

The “Shelter Me” series was created by filmmaker Steven Latham who wants to break down the negative perception and stigmas of public animal shelters and help people realize that shelter pets make the best pets. “Shelter Me” is presented by Ellen DeGeneres pet food company, Halo, Purely for Pets®, and together they are committed to the well being of shelter pets.
