The current crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan stems from the brutal persecution, slavery, and genocide enacted against the indigenous people by the rebel militia group the “Janjaweed.” This violence has created hundreds of thousands of orphans. These orphans have no form of child services or housing, and therefore are left to fend for themselves alone in the desert. 278 orphans died in one area alone, in less than a year’s time, simply from not having a safe place to sleep at night. The number one cause of death was wild hyena attack. In addition, they are extremely vulnerable to slave raiders when they are left alone.
Our goal is to house 400 Sudanese orphans, protect them from slavery, and provide them complete care (food, education, spiritual direction, medical care, and vocational training). Phase I—the dormitory for 200 orphan girls, a school, medical clinic, kitchen, dining hall, bathhouses and latrines with a chain-link security fence encompassing the entire compound—has already been completed. We are now beginning to build the orphan boys’ dormitory as well as helping with operating costs for the orphanage.
